House Resolution 908
Anti-Asian violence is not a new phenomenon, it did not suddenly appear out of nowhere. Back in Sept 2020, Congresswoman Grace Meng sponsored House Resolution 908:
This resolution calls on all public officials to condemn and denounce anti-Asian sentiment, racism, discrimination, and religious intolerance related to COVID-19 (i.e., coronavirus disease 2019) and calls on federal law enforcement officials, working with state and local officials, to take specified steps.
It calls on federal officials to expeditiously investigate and document all credible reports of hate crimes and incidents and threats against the Asian-American community and prosecute perpetrators.
The resolution recommits U.S. leadership to (1) prioritize language access and inclusivity in communication practices, and (2) combat misinformation and discrimination that put Asian Americans at risk
The resolution passed, despite 164 Republicans voting AGAINST this straight forward, no-brainer, resolution. Congresswoman Meng was then subject to threatening emails and voicemails which she bravely shared on Twitter. This is what a lot of people don’t understand. These attacks are not isolated events, they’re not anomalies, they’re not even shocking or rare anymore. This is America, and anti-Asian sentiment is REAL. Everyone needs to acknowledge this fact before we can fix it.
It’s hard to listen to, but I implore you to watch the video below see what we’re fighting against.
Last week my resolution condemning anti-Asian sentiment passed the House.

After that, I got many racist voicemails saying the very things we collectively condemned.
164 Republicans voted against #HRes908 & couldn’t condemn this hate. Words & actions have consequences. #COVID19 pic.twitter.com/lCFgVb8zoo
